Explore Women’s History in Brunswick

This summer, get a taste of women’s history with the Pejepscot Historical Society’s guided walking tours through Brunswick! Celebrate the women of the past who paved the way for our future.

There are two tours that feature the incredible women who helped shape our area. The first one, “Downtown with Candace Kanes,” will take place June 26. Historian Candace Kanes will take visitors on a walk through downtown Brunswick to areas that have had significance in women’s history. This tour covers Main and Pleasant streets, plus some of the Northwest Brunswick neighborhood, and focuses on women who leaders in city government, entrepreneurs, employees of downtown manufacturing firms, nurses, nuns, teachers and more.

Those interested should call the museum at 207-729-6606 or email [email protected] before noon the day of the walk to register. Walkers will meet at the Chamberlain Museum, located at 226 Main St. in Brunswick, at 1 p.m. June 26 to attend the tour and learn about some of the incredible women who have shaped the Pejepscot region’s history.

The second tour this summer that will feature women’s history will take place Aug. 14. This tour, the “Bowdoin College & Federal Street Tour,” will also be led by Kanes. Guests will walk from Federal Street to Pine Grove Cemetery, and around the Bowdoin College campus. On this tour, walkers will learn about women who were authors, activists, philanthropists, explorers and students, as well as a woman who was a former slave. These women were active in community and college affairs, and will serve as great role models to the women leaders of tomorrow.

This tour meets at the museum at 1 p.m. Aug. 14, and participants will then carpool to the start of the tour. As with the June walk, those interested should call or email ahead to reserve a spot in the walk.
